D.O.T. (49CFR part 172.303) and EPA (40 CFR part 262) "Require labeling substance containers for hazardous waste. Labels must be durable, in contrasting colors and in English. In placement, the label may not be obscured by other labels, attachments or markings."

Utilize DOT Shipping Labels can also be used as subsidiary hazard class labels per DOT 49 CRF 172.402(b) stating all labels identifying subsidiary hazard classes must display the hazard class or division number in the bottom point.

The term "health hazard" includes chemicals which are "carcinogens, toxic or highly toxic agents, reproductive toxins, irritants, corrosives, sensitizers, hepatoxins, nephrotoxins, neurotoxins, agents which act on the hematopoietic system, and agents which damage the lungs, skin, eyes, or mucous membranes."
