Arc Flash Protection
What is NFPA 70E?
NFPA 70E is the National Fire Protection Association Standard for Electrical Safety in the Workplace. Last published in February 2004, the standard is a recognized consensus standard for electrical safety work practices to safeguard employees from hazards such as shock and arc flash.
Why comply with NFPA 70E?
OSHA 29 CFR 1910.132 requires employers to conduct hazard assessments to identify hazards present, or likely to be present, that would necessitate use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Employers must select and have affected employees use the types of PPE to protect them from any hazards identified. OSHA deems the employer to be in compliance if PPE is selected using NFPA 70E Standards.
NFPA 70E - Three Ways To Analyze the Arc Flash Hazard
Employers are required to perform a flash hazard analysis in order to protect personnel from the possibility of being injured by an arc flash. The analysis shall determine the Flash Protection Boundary and the personal protective equipment that people within the Flash Protection Boundary shall use.
1. Detailed Flash Hazard Analysis
Where it is determined that work will be performed within the Flash Protection Boundary by NFPA 70E 130.3(A), the flash hazard analysis shall determine, and the employer shall document, the incident energy exposure of the worker (in calories per centimeter squared, cal/cm2). Reference NFPA 70E Annex D for information on estimating the incident energy. Upon determination and documentation of the incident energy associated with the specific task, the proper flame-resistant clothing and PPE.
2. NFPA 70E Hazard/Risk Category (HRC) Classifications and Protective Clothing and PPE Matrix
Use the NFPA 70E Table 130.7(C)(9)(a) to identify the HRC for a task. Once the HRC has been identified, NFPA 70E Table 130.7(C)(10) can help to determine the required PPE for the task.
3. NFPA 70E Annex H Simplified, Two-Category, Flame-Resistant (FR) Clothing System
The use of Table H.1 in Annex H is suggested for a simplified approach to assure adequate PPE for electrical workers within facilities with large and diverse electrical systems. The clothing systems listed in this table should be used with other PPE appropriate for the HRC.
